Learn the basics of Islām through a structured, in-person course lasting 3-4 years

The Boys and Girls Maktab Programme is a supervised and structured program of study for learning to read the Qur’ān while developing good manners, the basics of belief, how to pray and a number of other beneficial subjects. Upon conclusion, a child should become fluent in reading Arabic, memorised the entirety of the 29th and 30th Ajzā- and developed a good understanding of Islām.

Students will be required to:

  • Attend a minimum of 4 days a week, Monday – Thursday, 5-7pm;
  • Have reached the ages of 6 years old and be younger than 12 years old;
  • Inform the Instructor or Centre Administrator of absences at least half an hour before class;
  • Wear a Thobe and hat (boys) or an Abaya and Headscarf (girls); and,
  • A minimum of 80% attendance.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • Memorise the 29th and 30th Ajzā- of the Qur’ān;
  • Develop and practise the rules of Tajwīd;
  • Learn how to make Wuḍhū- and pray;
  • Learn who our creator is in light of the Qur’ān and Sunnah;
  • Learn who the last and final Messenger is in light of the Qur’ān and Sunnah, peace and blessings of Allāh Almighty be upon him;
  • Complete books 1-3 of “Tashīlu-l akhlāqi wa-l ādāb” (Jamiatul Ulama Taalimi Board, South Africa);
  • Complete the Qaidah: “Aḥsanu-l Qawā’id” (Azhar Academy); and,
  • Complete reading the Noble Qur’ān from cover-to-cover.

About the Instructor

Habib Ahmed

Habib Ahmed was raised in Loughborough for the majority of his life where he completed the memorisation of the Qurʾān in his early 20s. He is pursuing an Ijāzah as well as actively seeking knowledge locally.

The programme fee allows us to pay the teacher as well as funding any materials or stationary purchases/replacements.

If approved, we will issue a payment link to you prior to your child’s first session. We take payments via Stripe Link which has a fee attachment of 1.5% + 20p. Please see a breakdown below:

*Your payments will begin on the day you submit your first payment and will be taken automatically on a monthly basis thereafter.

Programme fee payments are handled via Stripe Subscriptions. If you miss a payment, Stripe will:

  • Notify you that a payment has failed;
  • Collect new payment information if necessary; and,
  • Update the default payment method on the subscription if new payment information has been supplied.

If a payment fails for any reason, the payment will enter a holding status for up to 3 weeks during which the processor will attempt to complete the payment up to 4 times. If the required conditions are not satisfied to complete the payment then the status will be set to ‘overdue’ and the subscription will continue.

A volunteer will then contact you directly to enquire after the missed payment.

If you will struggle to pay the course fee for your child(ren), please let us know and we can either spread the fee or reduce it depending on your circumstances.

The programme fee is designed to incorporate holidays so that we don’t need to ask you to subscribe again at a later date. Your payments will continue until your child either graduates, or you decide to cancel at any time.

Yes, we can take on students at any time in the year. Please note that when joining mid-term, the teacher will assess the student and decide where in the programme they will begin from.

Yes, please ensure that all students adhere to our dress code:

Boys:

  • Please wear a Thobe/Jubba;
  • Please wear a hat.

Girls:

  • Please wear an Abaya;
  • Please wear a Headscarf.

‍The centre will provide:

  • A Muṣḥaf: Both Kūfī and ‘Uthmānī scripts are avaiable;
  • A Rehab to put the Muṣḥaf on;
  • A copy of Aḥsanu-l Qawā’id.

Please can all students ensure they bring a notepad and pen to record progress and homework.

If a child does not meet the age requirement they will be observed by the teacher, and if they are deemed mature and suitable, they may be offered a place

Parents should inform the teacher or centre admin before the class

Parents are free to withdraw their child from the program and cancel their subscription, to do this parents should speak to the teacher before or after a lesson, or speak to the centre admin, or drop a message on the website contact from

If your child misbehaves during a lesson, the teacher will give three warnings before removing them from the class. The first warning will mean that the child was warned and reminded about their behaviour. The second warning will mean the child was reminded and was told to sit away from the class. The third warning will mean the child was asked to leave the class. The child will not be allowed to return to the class unless the parent attends and discusses the incident with the teacher.

Yes, you may cancel your subscription at any time and withdraw your child from his place on the programme. To do this, either speak to the programme teacher or volunteers before or after a session, or drop us a message via our contact form.
