A Short Biography of Imam Muḥammad

Imām Muḥammad Khalīlur Raḥmān, dedicated his life to the pursuit of sacred knowledge and the service of Islām.

He completed his ʿĀlimiyyah studies in Bishnat, Bangladesh in 1968, followed by his studies at Bangladesh ʿAliyyah Madrasah, Sylhet in 1976, and later achieved his Iftāʾ qualification from Dhaka ʿAliyyah Madrasah in 1977.

In 1977, he was appointed Mudīr and Principal of Rakhalgonj ʿAliyyah Madrassah.

Thereafter, he travelled to the blessed city of Madīnah, where he graduated from the Faculty of Ḥadīth, Islāmic University of Madīnah (1405 AH / 1981–1985).

During his time in Madīnah, he studied under and benefited from esteemed scholars, including:

  • Shaykh Saʿd Nidāʾ
  • Dr. ʿAbdul Fattāḥ Ashūr
  • Shaykh ʿAbdul Fattāḥ Ashmāwī
  • Shaykh Ali al Ḥudayfī

He also benefited from the lessons and company of senior scholars such as Shaykh Ibn Bāz (رحمه الله) he attended lessons in his home and public, Shaykh ʿAbdul Muḥsin al-ʿAbbād, and Shaykh ʿUmar Fallātah (at al-Ḥaram).

His Service in the UK

In 1985, he migrated to the United Kingdom and served as Imām in Mosley, Greater Manchester.
From 1986 onwards, he became the Head Imām and Khaṭīb of King Street Mosque, Loughborough, where he served with distinction for decades.

One of his greatest legacies was his teaching of Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr at King Street Mosque. This began in 1986 and, after thirty years of dedication, he completed the tafsīr in 2016. Following this, he continued delivering a summarised tafsīr until the end of 2022, when his health began to deteriorate.

His Final Message and Advice towards the end of his life, he reminded us of the verse:

قُلْ هَـٰذِهِ سَبِيلِي أَدْعُو إِلَى ٱللَّهِ عَلَىٰ بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا۠ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِي ۖ وَسُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

“Say, this is my path; I call to Allāh upon clear insight – I and those who follow me. Glory be to Allah, and I am not of those who associate partners with Him.” [Yūsuf: 108]

  • Live for the Ākhirah and strive to prepare for it.
  • He would often also advise; Hold firmly to the Qurʾān and Sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ.

On 8th August 2025, during one of his final advices to brothers, he said:

  • The seeker of knowledge walks upon a path where the angels spread their wings.
  • Knowledge must be sought with sincerity, reminding us of the ḥadīth on intentions mentioned by Imam Al Bukhari
  • He reminded us about the correct ʿAqīdah and belief of the Mīzān, that all deeds – good and bad – will be weighed and accounted for on the Day of Judgement.
