The Jazariyyah, by the teacher and prominent Imām of Qira’āt, Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Yusuf ibn al-Jazari, is the most famous poem of Tajwīd.
It is entitled al-Muqaddimah fīmā Yajibu `ala Qāri’ al-Qur’ān an-Ya`lamah (‘An introduction concerning which the reciter of Qur’ān is required to learn’). It is also just simply known as al-Muqaddimah al-Jazariyyah. It is called al-Jazariyyah as a reference back to its author.
It is a poem covering the science of Tajwīd written on the rajaz poetic metre and usually found as 109 lines.
Imām Jazari constructed the poem to make it easy to understand the rules of Tajwīd in order to teach students how to correctly recite the Qur’ān whilst applying the rules of Tajwīd.
Imām Jazari memorised the Qur’ān at 13; and studied under many ĥadīth scholars; Ibn Kathīr, Điyāuddīn and Bulqīnī gave him authorisations to issue edicts (fatāwa).
He is the highest authority on Qur’ān recitations and readings from his time onward. His notable works include: Muqaddimah, An-Nashr fi’l Qirā’āt al-Áshr, Ţayyibatu’n Nashr, Durratu’l Muđiyyah, Ghāyatu’l Maharah, Hidayah ilā Ulūm al-Riwāyah, Dhātu’sh Shifā, Taqrīb al-Nashr, Taĥbīr al-Taysīr, Nihāyatu’d Dirāyāt, Tamhīd, Munjid al-Muqriyīn, Ĥişn al-Ĥaşīn.
He passed away in Shīrāz on Friday 5th Rabī` al-Awwal 833AH.
